Kazakhstan inks new agreements and holds the first renewable energy auction in 2021

Kazakhstan’s hydrogen and ammonia markets are set to be boosted by a new partnership between KazMunayGas and Linde. Having inked a Memorandum of Understanding to explore both green and blue hydrogen and ammonia production, the companies agreed to cooperate and jointly develop clean energy projects in Kazakhstan.

As a first phase of the project, the companies will carry out a feasibility study to evaluate both using natural gas as a feedstock, to create blue hydrogen and blue ammonia, and water electrolysis technologies to create green hydrogen and green ammonia.

Moreover, the auctions for the selection of renewable energy projects have been held in Kazakhstan this month. According to the final results, the following companies were identified as winners of the solar & wind projects:

– NextEcoEnergy PTE LTD LLP (Kazakhstan)- SPP project with an installed capacity of 20 MW, auction price 12,87 tg/kWh (without VAT)
– Hyperborea LLP (Kazakhstan) – WPP project with an installed capacity of 50 MW, auction price 14,08 tg/kWh (without VAT)

The auctions were organised by JSC KOREM while the representatives of the Ministry of Energy of the Republic of Kazakhstan, NCE Atameken, the Association Qazaq Green, the Association of Renewable Energy of Kazakhstan, KAZENERGY, USAID and EBRD took part as observers.
